In a recent announcement made during the prestigious 2024 China 5G Development Conference, the results of the highly anticipated “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition, organized under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) guidance, were unveiled. China Broadcast Network and AsiaInfo jointly emerged victorious, winning the national first prize for their groundbreaking 5G wind power private network project - a global first featuring a fully localized core network. Notably, this is the sole wind power industry case among the national first-prize winners and follows an earlier triumph at the “Energy and Non-ferrous Metals” themed competition.

Launched in September 2023 at the Guangning Wind Power Farm in Guangdong Province, the project marks the establishment of China's first wind farm with full-scene 700MHz 5G private network coverage that meets rigorous power security standards and leverages a complementary and isolated public-private networking architecture.

The Guangning Wind Power Farm generates approximately 100 million kWh of electricity annually, translating into significant savings of 29,300 tons of standard coal and a carbon dioxide reduction of about 73,900 tons per year, thereby delivering substantial economic and environmental benefits. However, the wind power farm's location amidst the complex terrain and challenging meteorological conditions of northwestern Guangdong presents significant hurdles for communication, equipment inspection, and personnel safety.

The 700MHz frequency band of the 5G private network boasts extensive coverage, robust signal penetration, and minimal transmission loss, ensuring efficient and stable wireless communication for personnel communication, device interconnectivity, and inspection operations at the wind power farm.

This innovative project introduces AsiaInfo's independently developed 5G core network for power private networks, characterized by software-hardware decoupling, full cloud deployment, and elastic scalability. Coupled with 700MHz integrated base stations tailored for the wind power industry, the project integrates edge computing, autonomous network operations and maintenance, and secure business traffic segregation with the underlying network, facilitating advanced applications such as robotic operations, drone inspections, wind turbine vibration monitoring, blade crack analysis, and lightning strike warnings. Furthermore, the project team has explored a systematic approach to integrating 5G private networks with edge data acquisition, operation and maintenance process control, operation safety management, and remote diagnosis and troubleshooting, paving a new and replicable path for the digital intelligence transformation of the wind power industry.
